Please join us in supporting the Women's Chorus this week as they prepare for their performance at the Michigan Music Conference!

The Michigan Music Conference is annually attended by more than 2,000 music educators from across the state and region. A blind listening panel selected only six choirs (middle and high school) from across the entire state to perform at this conference. This is considered one of the pinnacles of choir achievement in the state of Michigan.

From the President

Dear Rockford Choir Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the 2011-12 school year. I'm Carol Jewell, the Rockford Choir Booster Board's president. Choir Boosters help Mr. Duiven and Mrs. and Mr. Scott in a variety of ways, freeing them to focus on the job they were hired to do; develop music literacy and foster a lifelong love of music.

Last year the RHS vocal music program was a success on many levels. We nearly sold out six shows of Fiddler on the Roof, produced a Christmas CD of all of our choirs and the first ever Aces CD, Unaccompanied Minors. We received superior ratings at both MSVMA State Choral Festival and Solo & Ensemble Festival; 17 students made Regional Honors Choir, 9 moved on to State, and 4 made it all the way to All-State Choir. The women of Chamber Singers were invited to sing at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival and Chamber Singers performed with American Idol finalist, Matt Giraud. Additionally, last May, Mrs. Scott received word that Women's Chorus (our choir consisting of mainly sophomore girls) has been chosen to sing at the Michigan Music Conference in January 2012. If you think our year couldn't have gotten any better, it culminated with a trip to New York City to sing under the tutelage of renowned conductor Z. Randall Stroope. We performed in legendary Carnegie Hall and it was the experience of a lifetime for our kids and chaperones alike!

Please take an active role in helping to make your child's choir experience be the best it can be. I believe the more active the boosters are the better our vocal music program will be because it allows our directors to concentrate on the students. Here are some of the ways we assist:

supplement choir budget for additional materials, such as choral octavos for every singer

provide chaperones for on and off site venues

provide volunteers for musicals (with hundreds of hours of volunteer time for various committees)

produce Cabaret (with the need of 20+ volunteers)

provide parent liaisons from each choir to facilitate better communication

provide diverse musical experiences by bringing in guest clinicians

fit our students for their concert attire

pay festival fees

Providing this assistance requires a large amount of money. As the parent of three active sons I know the dread in people's hearts when they hear the phrase “fund raising”, so last year we launched the inaugural Friends of the Choir program. We were able to raise money without buying wrapping paper, pizza or candles! It was such a success and welcomed by so many that we plan to make it an annual event. You will hear more about this opportunity very soon.

Communication between school and home is critical for running the quality programs we are blessed with at Rockford. This year we are “going green”. All mass communication will come through the choir web site www.rockfordchoirs.org. All required forms will be found on the web site, and thanks to our amazing web master, Vincenzo Pavano, you will be able to fill them out electronically, eliminating the need to return any papers to school!

Lastly, I would like to welcome our freshman families. You will quickly learn how blessed we are to be a part of one of the most accomplished programs in the state. For the past 11 years our directors have offered The Freshman Retreat, so our students can quickly bond, as well as meet some of our upperclassmen (Chamber Singers are their counselors). My son loved it as a freshman and is thrilled to have the privilege to return as one of the counselors. I highly recommend your child to go. This year's dates are September 23-24.

I am excited to see what this year brings our students. Please get involved in the Choir Boosters. Meetings will be Thursdays September 29, January 12, and April 19 at 7pm in the RHS choir room. If you have any questions, please contact me at 866-6506 or irishwahine@att.net.

Sincerely,

Carol Jewell
RHS Choir Booster President
